Description

The sonic worlds of the piano trio lie at the heart of this programme. Its point of departure is Isabel Mundry’s piano trio of the same title, written for the ensemble and premiered in March 2025 at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. In finely wrought musical fragments, the work explores transitional sound spaces in which piano and strings merge, giving rise to a multifaceted ensemble instrument.

Joseph Haydn’s C major Trio (1797), composed for the virtuoso pianist Therese Jansen, shows the composer at the height of his powers. Expansive gestures, striking accents, contrasting sonorities and a witty finale already point towards Beethoven and open new perspectives on the genre.

Franz Schubert’s monumental E-flat major Trio, his last completed chamber work, spans a wide expressive arc between triumphant gesture and existential depth. Extreme contrasts, lyrical abysses and eruptive outbursts make this work one of the most compelling statements in the piano trio repertoire.

Trio E.T.A.
Founded in Hamburg in 2019, Trio E.T.A. pays homage to the writer, composer, and critic E.T.A. Hoffmann. The ensemble began its journey with romantic music, embraces artistic crossovers, and explores the chamber music repertoire from classical to contemporary works. E.T.A. Hoffmann serves as an inspiration for the musicians due to his versatility and his devotion to music as the highest art form. In addition to performing the great masterpieces for piano trio, the group is particularly drawn to lesser-known works, exciting new discoveries, and contemporary compositions.
